Fairfield, Connecticut
is a family friendly town that ranked ninth in Money Magazine's 2006 list of “Best Place to Live” in the United States. The television show, “Who's the Boss” took place in Fairfield, with many of Fairfield's streets and parts of neighboring Bridgeport seen in certain episodes. Founded in 1639, the city of Fairfield has several places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They include the Bronson Windmill, the David Ogden House, Fairfield Railroad Stations, the Greenfield Hill Historic District, the John Osborne House, Jonathan Sturges House, the Pine Creek Park Bridge, the Southport Historic District and Southport Railroad Stations.
Situated on The Gold Coast of Connecticut on Long Island Sound, Fairfield offers 30 miles of coastline where you can tour an island lighthouse, kayak the Norwalk Islands, take a sunset sail, or relax on a beautiful beach. That's not all, there are sporting events, golf, tennis - you can even go on an educational eco-study cruise to learn about the different habitats of Long Island Sound. The resort beaches of the area are outstanding. Fairfield is home to Jennings Beach, located on South Benson Road. This saltwater beach is perfect for swimming and has a boat launch and marina, a fishing pier, hiking trails, picnic areas, a playground and volleyball court. The Lake Mohegan Recreational Area is another popular spot in Fairfield. Here, you'll find walking/hiking paths around the lake along with picnicking, swimming, fishing, food concessions and restrooms. Lake Mohegan is located on Morehouse Highway. Over a dozen more resort beaches are located in Fairfield County, as well as nature centers and parks for birding, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, crabbing and ice skating and cross-country skiing in the wintertime. Autumn is another favorite time of year when visitors can pick apples during the fall harvest or take a scenic hike through the New England countryside to soak up the changing colors of the leaves.
If your idea of a good time doesn't involve hiking boots or fishing poles, Fairfield has a lot to offer you, as well. Museums, art galleries, a nationally acclaimed aquarium and a great zoo can all be found in Fairfield County. The Maritime Aquarium is a fascinating way to view sea life up close and personal. Watch sea otters frolic, come within inches of sharks, seals, huge sea turtles, jelly fish and more. The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport is dedicated to the life and times of P.T. Barnum. Exhibits at this museum include General Tom Thumb, Jenny Lind, a miniature circus, an Egyptian mummy and a Victorian Palace. In the nearby town of Wilton, you can wander through a 19th century Victorian shopping village along the banks of the Norwalk River. For a day of relaxation and pampering, Coastal Fairfield is also home to over two dozen spas that offer everything from full body massage to aromatherapy treatments. The list of interesting places to visit in the Fairfield resort region is vast and varied, with something for everyone of every age and in every season.
