Fairfield
has an enviable location on the edge of picturesque Long Island Sound in southwest Connecticut. The town is home to beautiful public resort beaches and a coastline that offers many water sports, a great dock and full-service marina. Fairfield resort town offers cultural activities in the way of local theater and art galleries, lovely parks and woodlands, golf, tennis, nature trails, playgrounds, shopping and great restaurants. The Southport area of Fairfield was settled in 1639 and has been designated as the historic district of the city, noted for its harbor, churches, historic public buildings and homesteads.
Fairfield is home to approximately 58,000 residents and has a very low crime rate. The city made Money Magazine's 2006 list of “Best Places to Live in the United States” and was ranked as the second safest municipality in the nation. It is only an hour and 10 minutes to New York City and thirty minutes from New Haven, Connecticut. In 2004, there were 20,856 households in Fairfield with a median age of 39 and a median household income of almost $91,000. About 85 percent of Fairfield residents live in single-family detached homes. These homes are located along the shore as well as inland and have a median price of $318,750 and an average price of $430,926.
The city of Fairfield has a total area of 31.3 miles, of which 1.3 miles is water. Lake Mohegan, which includes waterfalls called The Cascades, is located in the middle of town. The city of Fairfield is comprised of several distinct neighborhoods. Aside from the aforementioned historic Southport area, the other neighborhoods are: Greenfield Hill, which is known for its many dogwood trees, picturesque green and white-spired Congregational church; Stratfield, which is located near the town of Bridgeport; the Lake Mohegan area and the Fairfield Beach area, where many of the Fairfield University students live. Two shopping districts in Fairfield include Post Road (or U.S. Route 1) and Black Rock Turnpike. The city of Fairfield is considered to have one of the best school systems in the state of Connecticut and serves almost 8,000 students from pre-school through high school. There are a total of 16 public and private schools in the town, as well as two private universities – Sacred Heart University and Fairfield University.
The city of Fairfield is situated in the county of Fairfield, but as is the case with all eight of Connecticut's counties, there is no county seat and no county government. All towns are responsible for all local government activities, including fire and rescue, snow removal and schools. The Fairfield county towns of Greenwich, Wilton, Darien, Weston and New Canaan are all ranked in the twenty most affluent communities in the United States and the towns that border Long Island Sound are sometimes referred to as The Gold Coast.
